Local Groups and Communities
Our Lady’s Island Parish has a well-equipped, modern Community Centre that is used for many purposes and is available for a wide range of functions. Current full time users include FAS, a child care centre, and a community library. In addition, there are many other local groups to include the ICA , GAA, local parish committees, youth groups and Tops of the Town who make use of the facilities on an annual basis. The kitchen in the Community Centre may be employed for providing refreshments following funerals and other church and local functions. Ad hoc uses include local Tidy Towns, Lady’s Island Lake, cake and bric a brac sales, charity auctions and other conferences and public gatherings and meetings. The most notable use of the Community Centre is during the Pilgrimage Season where it is used as a base for the provision of refreshments and hot drinks to pilgrims.
Size, Capacity and Raised Stage
The Hall measures some 20 plus metres in width and length and can comfortably and safely sit several hundred people. Presentations may be made from a substantial , raised stage in the Hall; or as is often the case, from a table or dais set up elsewhere on the Hall floor. The Hall lends itself to a range of functions to include public addresses, meetings, talks, conferences and other public or private gatherings.
There is a store of tables and chairs available for a variety of conference, meeting and sale lay-outs in the Hall. Ancillary facilities such as sound, AV and Web display services may be arranged as necessary.
The Kitchen
The kitchen has been remodelled in order to properly cater for the provision of hot drinks, beverages and other prepared foods (cakes, biscuits, sandwiches) to pilgrims ‘doing the Island’ during the Pilgrimage Season. The numbers of people who may avail of such services can easily reach several thousand daily on the main Pilgrimage Days. The new kitchen shall incorporate display, washing, dishwashing, water heating, food preparatory and storage spaces according to contemporaneous food standards. The new kitchen is planned to be commissioned in time for the Pilgrimage Season in 2011.
Offices
Offices at the reception area and on the ground floor house the local FAS organisation.
A further office at the reception houses a Community Library and office service to include the provision of CV preparation services and similar.
